English as a Second Language
 
International students may be required to enroll in the ESL class until the teacher deems the student has a sufficient mastery of the English language to comprehend and communicate subject concepts.

Course Objectives
I.   Students will be introduced to American culture.
  • The American family
  • Home/house vocabulary
  • Health/medical information
  • Shopping (American sizes)
  • Food (e.g., jello, peanut-butter-jelly sandwiches)
  • Education system
  • Brief U.S. history
  • Brief U.S. geography
  • Holidays and celebrations

II.   Students will learn American English.
  • Pronunciation/phonics
  • Auditory (listening) exercises
  • Oral (repeating) exercises
  • Conversation/dialogue
  • Vocabulary (word meaning and usage)
  • Idioms
III.   The students will develop  language skills.
  • Grammar
  • Reading comprehension
  • Letter writing
  • Essay writing
IV.    The students will participate in language-related games.
  • Bingo
  • Scrabble
  • Hang-man
  • Etc.
V.   The students will view family-oriented films (DVDs) with English-subtitles.
  • Writing critiques
  • Writng opinions

ESL Course Outline

This class meets four days a week, Monday to Thursday.
